Best Co-op Horror Games to Play With Friends This Halloween (2026)

PaxJax Blog — Best Co-op Horror Games to Play With Friends This Halloween (2026)

Horror is better with other people. Being scared on your own is fine, but being scared with three friends, one of whom has just walked into the ghost room without a crucifix, is what makes October nights memorable. Co-op horror only works if the people around you talk, though. A lobby of strangers who won’t call out what they saw turns a scary game into a frustrating one. Here are five co-op horror games worth building a squad for this Halloween, what each has planned for October 2026, and how to find the people to play them with.

What makes a co-op horror game worth a squad

  • Shared information. The best ones split what each player knows, so the team has to talk to survive. One player sees the evidence, another watches the map, and nobody wins alone.
  • Real consequences. A death that costs the whole team something makes every call matter.
  • Roles. Games where someone runs the van, the terminal or the rear guard reward a group that has agreed who does what.
  • Laughs between the scares. The games people come back to every October are as funny as they are frightening.

Phasmophobia: the ghost hunt

Players: up to 4, or solo · Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, with VR, all with crossplay

Four investigators, one haunted house, and a ghost you have to identify from the evidence before it hunts you. Phasmophobia is the co-op horror game most built around talking. The player in the van watching the cameras knows things the player holding the EMF reader doesn’t, and a team that shares what it has ruled out gets the answer fast.

This October: Crimson Eye, Kinetic Games’ Halloween event, runs from 8 October to 1 November, with eight maps rotating under Blood Moon weather and Double XP and rewards from 15 to 22 October.

Here’s how to find people to play Phasmophobia with and build a team while the event is on.

Lethal Company: the quota

Players: up to 4, or solo · Platforms: Windows PC on Steam only, still in Early Access

Four employees scavenging abandoned moons for scrap to meet the Company’s quota, while things in the dark try to eat them. Lethal Company is the funniest game on this list and the cheapest. It’s also the one where a crew that has agreed who runs the terminal does far better than one that hasn’t. Voice is proximity-based, so once you split up, the walkie-talkies and the player on the ship’s terminal are all that hold the crew together.

This October: no Halloween event is announced, but the game turns three on 23 October. The latest update is Version 80, The Blooming Update, from April 2026, and Zeekerss says the next one will be more content-focused.

Here’s how to find people to play Lethal Company with and keep a standing crew.

Dead by Daylight: the four against one

Players: 4 survivors against 1 killer · Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, with crossplay

Four survivors repair generators and try to escape while another player hunts them as the killer. Solo queue works, but a survivor team that plays together, taking turns on the chase and calling out where the killer went, gets far more out of every match.

This October: Behaviour’s Year 11 roadmap confirms Haunted by Daylight returns this October. The current chapter, Chorus of Sin, arrived in August.

Here’s how to find people to play Dead by Daylight with for a regular survivor team.

Hunt: Showdown 1896: the bounty

Players: solo, duos or trios · Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (consoles play together, PC is separate)

Hunt is the tensest game on this list. Teams hunt monsters in a swamp in 1896 for a bounty, while every other team on the map tries to take it from them. It’s horror and PvP at once, and it’s the least forgiving of randoms. A trio that already knows how to split up, hold an angle and revive each other wins fights a random trio loses.

This October: Blood Testament Chapter 2 began on 6 October. It brings back the Inferno time of day, with wildfires across every map, and adds Bloodweavers, a deadlier Bileweaver variant that only appears under the Blood Moon. Next up is All Hallow’s Cleave, a five-stage community event that unlocks two new Tarot cards and a new tool, the Long Derringer. Crytek hasn’t dated it yet.

Find a trio on the Hunt: Showdown 1896 hub.

GTFO: the hardest one

Players: 4, with bots filling empty slots · Platforms: Windows PC on Steam only

GTFO is four prisoners working through a dark underground complex full of sleeping monsters that wake at the slightest noise. It’s the hardest game here by some distance, built for four players who plan every room before anyone moves. Bots can fill a slot or two, but GTFO is at its best with four humans on mics.

This October: GTFO is finished. Rundown 8.0, Duality, concluded the story in December 2023, and 10 Chambers hasn’t added new content since. That makes it a complete game you can play through as a team without waiting on updates, but it has no Halloween event.

Find a team on the GTFO hub.

Where to find a horror squad

All five games have the same problem. They’re built for a group that talks, and public lobbies rarely give you one. A “need 2 for Nightmare, EU, mics” or “LF3 for Hunt” post gets buried in minutes, and the people who answer won’t be there next week.

That’s the gap PaxJax fills. Instead of starting over every night, you can:

  • Filter players by game, platform and region, so the people you find can join your lobby.
  • Jump into each game’s chat to find players who are online and looking right now.
  • Send an Invite to Play directly, so getting a squad together takes one tap.
  • Save a standing squad, so the same people come back for your next Halloween night.

Make it a regular night

October goes better with the same people every week. Pick one of these games, find two or three players who call out what they see and stay after a bad round, and set a regular night before the events start. By Halloween you’ll be the team that goes back into the ghost room on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best co-op horror games to play with friends in 2026?
Phasmophobia, Lethal Company, Dead by Daylight, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and GTFO. They cover a range: Phasmophobia and Lethal Company are four-player co-op with a lot of laughing, Dead by Daylight puts four survivors against a player killer, Hunt is a tense PvPvE shooter for up to three, and GTFO is the hardest four-player co-op of the group.
Which co-op horror games have Halloween events in 2026?
Phasmophobia's Crimson Eye event runs from 8 October to 1 November, and Behaviour's roadmap confirms Haunted by Daylight returns for Dead by Daylight in October. Hunt: Showdown 1896 started Blood Testament Chapter 2 on 6 October, with the All Hallow's Cleave community event coming next. Lethal Company and GTFO have no Halloween event announced.
Which co-op horror games are cross-platform?
Phasmophobia has crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with VR players in the same lobbies. Dead by Daylight has crossplay across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Lethal Company and GTFO are PC only. In Hunt: Showdown 1896, PlayStation 5 and Xbox players play together, but PC players are separate.
What is the scariest co-op horror game for a group of four?
For pure dread, GTFO. It's designed around four players who have to plan every room and move quietly, and one noisy mistake can wake the whole level. For horror that's scary and funny at the same time, Lethal Company and Phasmophobia are better picks for a mixed group.
How do I find people to play co-op horror games with?
Public lobbies will fill a team, but they won't give you the same people twice, and horror co-op depends on trusting the people next to you. On PaxJax you can filter players by game, platform and region, send an Invite to Play, and save a standing squad for your regular night.
