How Many People Play CS2 in 2026?
Most “player count” articles are guesswork dressed up as data. Counter-Strike 2 is the rare exception: Valve publishes the number, it’s free to query, and you can check it yourself in about ten seconds. Here’s the real figure, the three things that break the versions you’ll find elsewhere, and what the number can’t tell you.
The short answer
Over the last 30 days, Counter-Strike 2 averaged 840,851 concurrent players on Steam, peaking at 1,362,464. Its all-time peak is 1,862,531, set on 12 April 2025.
At the moment this was written — 5 August 2026, 22:30 UTC — the live count was 766,800.
That last number will already be wrong by the time you read it, and that’s the point. It’s a Wednesday-evening-in-Europe reading. Check on a Saturday afternoon and it will be substantially higher; check at 06:00 UTC and much lower.
Why this number is actually trustworthy
Almost every player count you’ll read for a mobile or console game is modelled from download data or search interest. CS2’s isn’t. Valve exposes a public endpoint that returns the live concurrent count for any Steam app:
https://api.steampowered.com/ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers/v1/?appid=730
No key, no account, no scraping. It returns JSON. This is the same source every tracking site is reading, which means you’re never dependent on their interpretation — you can go straight to the thing they’re quoting.
CS2 is also PC-and-Steam-only, so there’s no console or mobile population sitting outside the count. For most games that caveat is fatal to the whole exercise. For this one, it isn’t.
The three things that break the numbers you’ll find
1. “Concurrent” is not “players.” These four figures are all true of CS2 right now, and they range across a factor of 2.4:
| Statistic | Figure |
|---|---|
| Live concurrent (5 Aug 2026, 22:30 UTC) | 766,800 |
| 30-day average concurrent | 840,851 |
| 30-day peak concurrent | 1,362,464 |
| All-time peak concurrent | 1,862,531 |
A site can quote any of these as “the CS2 player count” without technically lying. None of them is the number most people are actually asking for — how many distinct humans play CS2 in a month — and Valve doesn’t publish that at all.
2. Counter-Strike is now split across two Steam apps. On 3 March 2026, Valve re-released Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as a standalone app — appid 4465480 — instead of the legacy branch buried inside CS2. It’s unlisted, so it won’t surface in Steam search, and Valve runs no official matchmaking for it; it’s bots and community servers.
That matters for counting. At the same moment CS2 showed 766,800, the standalone CS:GO app showed 3,247. Small, but it means “the Counter-Strike player count” is now an ambiguous phrase, and any figure that doesn’t say which appid it’s reading is imprecise by construction.
3. Even reputable trackers disagree. At the time of writing, SteamCharts lists CS2’s all-time peak as 1,818,368. That figure is real — it was the franchise record — but it was set in March 2025 and superseded a month later by the 1,862,531 peak on 12 April 2025, which SteamDB and contemporaneous reporting both recorded.
Two respected trackers, reading the same Valve API, disagreeing on the single most-quoted statistic about the game. Not because either is dishonest, but because they poll at intervals and a sharp spike can land between one tracker’s samples. If two good sources disagree this much, treat every number you see without a timestamp and a definition as approximately meaningless.
Is CS2 dying?
Worth taking seriously, because the recent trend genuinely is downward:
| Month | Avg. concurrent | Peak concurrent |
|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | 932,721 | 1,489,217 |
| June 2026 | 916,654 | 1,573,727 |
| July 2026 | 853,232 | 1,420,896 |
| Last 30 days | 840,851 | 1,362,464 |
That’s roughly a 10% fall in average concurrents across three months. Anyone telling you CS2 is untouchable is ignoring the data.
Two caveats before you conclude anything. First, northern-hemisphere summer dips are a well-established seasonal pattern in PC concurrents across effectively the whole platform — a June-to-August decline is the expected shape of the year, not a signal on its own. The honest test is what September and October look like against last year’s.
Second, scale. 840,000 average concurrent players is more than the vast majority of games on Steam have ever hit at their all-time peak. A game can be declining and still be one of the largest on the platform. Both things are true here, and most articles pick whichever one fits their headline.
The question behind the question
Here’s the thing about all of this: if you’re searching for the CS2 player count, there’s a decent chance the number isn’t what you actually want to know.
840,851 average concurrent players tells you nothing about whether you can get a game. What determines that is your region, your rank band, and the hours you actually play — and a global figure flattens all three. Half a million players worldwide is irrelevant at 01:00 in your region in a rank bracket that’s thin where you live.
The practical test isn’t the global count. It’s whether you can field four people you’d actually want to queue with, at the times you play. That’s a much smaller number and a far more useful one — and unlike the global figure, it’s something you can change.
CS2 is one of the biggest games on Steam, currently in a seasonal dip, and genuinely measurable — which puts it in a small minority. Take the number with a timestamp and a definition attached, check it yourself when you want it, and then go solve the problem the number was standing in for.

Frequently asked questions
- How many people play CS2 in 2026?
- Over the last 30 days Counter-Strike 2 averaged 840,851 concurrent players on Steam and peaked at 1,362,464. Concurrent means people in-game at the same moment, so the total number of people who play CS2 in a given month is considerably higher — Valve does not publish that figure, and anyone quoting an exact monthly player total is estimating.
- Is CS2 dying in 2026?
- The three-month trend is genuinely downward: monthly average concurrents went 932,721 in May, 916,654 in June, and 853,232 in July 2026. That is roughly a 10% decline. But it is a decline from an enormous base — 840,000 average concurrent players is more than almost any game on Steam ever reaches at peak — and northern-hemisphere summer dips are a well-established seasonal pattern in PC concurrents, so a single summer is weak evidence of structural decline.
- What is the all-time peak player count for CS2?
- 1,862,531 concurrent players, set on 12 April 2025. That broke the previous franchise record of 1,818,368 from March 2025. Be careful here — some trackers still display the March figure as the all-time peak, so you will find both numbers quoted as if they were the same statistic.
- Why do CS2 player counts differ between sites?
- Mostly because they are reporting different statistics under the same label — live concurrent, 24-hour peak, 30-day average, and all-time peak differ by more than 2x for CS2. The rest is polling: trackers sample Valve's API at intervals rather than continuously, so a short spike can be recorded by one tracker and missed entirely by another.
- Is CS:GO still playable in 2026?
- Yes. On 3 March 2026 Valve re-released Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as a standalone Steam app (appid 4465480) rather than a branch of CS2. It is unlisted, so it will not appear in Steam search, and Valve does not run official matchmaking for it — you play it against bots or on community servers. It also means Counter-Strike's Steam population is now split across two apps.
- How do I check the CS2 player count myself?
- Query Valve's public Steam API directly: api.steampowered.com/ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers/v1/?appid=730. It returns the current concurrent count as JSON, with no key required. That is the same source every tracking site is reading, so you can always check their numbers against it.
