How to Find a Squad for Gears of War: E-Day

PaxJax Blog — How to Find a Squad for Gears of War: E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day launches on 6 October 2026, and it gives you three ways to play with other people: a four-player campaign, a 12-player Horde mode and 4v4 Versus. Each one is a different “I need people” problem, and they don’t share an answer. A squad that’s great for Horde Siege may have no interest in Ranked, and your campaign partner might never touch Versus. Here’s how to find the right four for the mode you actually want, and why to do it before early access opens on 1 October.

What you need to know about Gears of War: E-Day

  • Release: 6 October 2026.
  • Early access: up to five days, from 1 October, with the Premium Edition ($99.99), the $30 Premium Edition Upgrade or the Collector’s Edition. The Standard Edition ($69.99) starts on 6 October.
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S and PC, through the Xbox app or Steam. Bought from Xbox, it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so one purchase covers console and the Xbox app on PC.
  • No PS5: Xbox says E-Day is an Xbox console exclusive, and not a timed one.
  • Game Pass: day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Online multiplayer on Xbox consoles needs Game Pass Essential or higher.
  • Cross-play: Xbox and PC play together, with shared progression across both.
  • Setting: fourteen years before the original Gears of War, over three days in the city of Kalona, as the Locust erupt from the E-holes for the first time. It’s developed by The Coalition.

Three modes, three different squads

In every mode, the group you bring is four. What those four need from each other is different.

Campaign co-opUp to 4 online, 2 split-screen on consoleBravo SquadThe same people, session after session
Horde Siege12, in three squads of four (PvE)One squad of fourCovering each other’s classes

Campaign co-op: pick your Bravo Squad

The campaign follows Bravo Squad: Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago and two new playable characters, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. All four are playable from the start, so a group of four never has to argue about who plays whom. You can play online with up to four people, or two in split-screen on a console.

Two details make mixed-skill groups easier. Each player picks their own difficulty, so a veteran and a first-timer can play together without one of them having a bad time. Only the host can pause, so the host should be whoever’s most likely to get called away mid-mission.

The hard part of campaign co-op is scheduling, not skill. A story campaign needs the same people for session after session. The partner worth finding is the one who’s free when you are and won’t play ahead without you.

Horde Siege: the mode that most needs a real squad

Horde Siege is the new take on Horde. Twelve players, in three COG squads of four, share a map that spans several city blocks. Each squad gets its own mission and joins a battle already in progress, crossing paths with the other squads. When your main objectives are done, you clear a landing zone and survive until your Raven arrives. Along the way:

  • Classes shape the squad. It launches with four: Assault, Breacher, Marksman and Medic, with more coming in seasonal updates. The Coalition says you’re free to drop in as four Breachers if you want, so nothing forces a balanced squad. Settle who’s playing what before you queue, not after the first fight goes wrong.
  • You spend together. Energy buys equipment, Squad Perk upgrades and weapons at Supply Caches, and turret installations at defensive positions. You can also inherit fortifications and equipment that other squads left behind. Agree on who’s spending on what.
  • Invasion events pull everyone in. Iconic Gears bosses, like a Corpser or a Brumak, arrive with their own supporting units. The Coalition says they’re best taken on with all three squads working together, and that’s easier when your own four already have a plan.
  • You can hear the other squads. Proximity chat is only in Horde Siege, so you’ll hear players from other squads nearby. Keep your own squad on voice so your calls don’t get lost.

Microsoft’s store page confirms you can drop in as a four-player squad. There are three maps at launch, and a squad that learns them together gets more out of every run.

Versus: Ranked is a team game

Every Versus mode is 4v4. At launch you get Team Deathmatch, Demolition, Conquest (a take on King of the Hill where zones stay live until a team holds one long enough to score) and the new Crucible (carry the Power Core and hold it inside the zone to score), across six maps: Outpost, Battleship, Park, Precinct, Market and Skyward. Limited-time modes follow after launch.

Playlists are split into Ranked and Social. In Social, players vote on what they play next, so a good lobby can stay together for a whole evening. Ranked is where a stack of four you trust is worth the most. Solo queue means three strangers who may not talk.

Settle platform, Game Pass and early access before 1 October

  • Early access splits squads. Premium owners start on 1 October. Players on the Standard Edition or Game Pass start on 6 October. If you want to start together, agree which date you’re aiming for.
  • Nobody on PlayStation. A friend who only plays on PS5 can’t join, now or later.
  • Console players need the online tier. Online multiplayer on Xbox needs Game Pass Essential or higher, even if they bought the game outright.
  • Steam players link an Xbox account. It’s needed to send a cross-platform squad invite, so get it done before launch night.
  • Everyone starts fresh. The open beta’s title, medal and challenge rewards carry over, but class progression and Player Level don’t. Nobody gets a head start on classes.

How PaxJax helps you build it

The usual places to find teammates (in-game lobbies, subreddits, big Discord servers) work for one match. They’re bad at finding people who play your mode, on your schedule, and still show up next week. A “need 1 Medic for Horde Siege, mic” post gets buried in minutes.

That’s the gap PaxJax fills. Instead of starting over every night, you can:

  • Filter players by game, platform and region, so the people you find are playing when you are and on a connection that works.
  • Send an Invite to Play directly, so getting the squad together takes one tap.
  • Save a standing squad with a Looking-for-Team profile, so your four are ready on 1 October (or 6 October) instead of forming up in the lobby.

Find Your Gears of War: E-Day Squad

Keep the squad past launch week

A day-one Game Pass launch brings a lot of new players in during the same week, and most of them are looking for people. That’s the easiest recruiting window you’ll get all year. It closes fast, because a month in, the good players already have their squads. When a Horde Siege run goes well or a Ranked night clicks, add those people, note who played Medic without being asked, and queue with them again tomorrow.
