Mario Kart World puts 24 racers on the track at once, and it’s become more than a party game. Nintendo runs regular official online events, Knockout Tour has team races, and colleges are starting to give it varsity spots. A good night of Mario Kart needs a full room of people who show up. A good team needs people who practise. Here’s how to find both in 2026.

Why a team beats a random lobby

Random online races are fine for a quick session, but you never race the same people twice. A team gets you three things a lobby can’t:

  • A full room when you want one. Rooms hold up to 24 racers. A standing group means you can fill one on a set night instead of waiting for strangers.
  • Practice that carries over. Racing the same people every week is how you learn lines, item timing and which shortcuts are worth the risk.
  • Teammates for team races. Knockout Tour has had team races since January, and rooms have a team setting for splitting racers up. Team scoring rewards racers who protect each other, not just the leader.

Agree on the room rules first

The host of a room sets the rules, so a team should agree on them before anyone races. Arguing about items mid-session is how groups fall apart.

  • Class. 150cc is the usual competitive setting, and it’s what Nintendo’s own Fall Cup uses.
  • Items. Normal items are standard for events. Frantic is for fun nights. Since the 1.4.0 update, you can also pick a custom item set.
  • COM racers. Competitive rooms usually turn COM racers off, so only real players count.
  • Courses. Choose open, random or connected courses, and agree on how many races a session is.
  • Teams. Decide whether you’re racing for yourselves or splitting into teams, and how.

Platform and online basics

Mario Kart World is on Nintendo Switch 2 only, and the standard game is $79.99. Everything online needs Nintendo Switch Online: rooms, matchmaking, official events and GameChat.

  • Online: up to 24 racers, with up to 2 players per console.
  • Rooms: create one in Online Play and share the 6-digit Room ID, or have friends join from your Friends list. Since update 1.8.0 (9 September 2026), a room holds up to 26 people: 24 racing, plus spectators.
  • Local: up to 4 players in split-screen on one console, up to 8 players over local wireless, and up to 24 over LAN for big in-person events.
  • GameChat works for voice, and video needs a USB camera.

Racing for a college or school team

Mario Kart World is starting to show up in college esports. Manchester University in Indiana is adding it to its varsity lineup for fall 2026, with scholarships, and Indiana Wesleyan is adding Mario Kart for 2026–27. If your school is starting a team, a few things are worth settling early:

  • Which game your league runs. Some scholastic leagues still use Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, not Mario Kart World. Check before you buy consoles or build a roster.
  • A roster with subs. Match days don’t move for exams, so carry more racers than you need.
  • A practice room. Set a weekly night in a private room with your league’s rules, so race day looks like practice.
  • LAN for in-person events. LAN play takes up to 24 racers across consoles on a wired network, which is how a campus event fills a full grid.

Official events this autumn

Nintendo runs Mario Kart World events that you join from Online Play by searching a 4-digit event ID. In North America, the Mario Kart World Fall Cup 2026 is open to players aged 13 and over in the US and Canada, and 18 and over in Mexico:

  • Qualifiers run on 17–18 October and 21–22 November. Finish in the top 24 of any qualifier to reach the final.
  • The final is on 12 December. Three groups of 24 race, and the top 8 from each make a 24-racer final.
  • Rules: 150cc, normal items, no teams.

A team that practises together in rooms with these settings has a real edge, because qualifiers are long sessions against a full grid.

What’s new in Mario Kart World

Nintendo has kept updating the game for free since launch on 5 June 2025. Recent highlights:

  • 1.5.0 (21 January 2026): team races in Knockout Tour.
  • 1.6.0 (30 March 2026): a new Battle mode, Bob-omb Blast.
  • 1.7.0 (30 June 2026): Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally in Knockout Tour.
  • 1.8.0 (9 September 2026): 10 courses from Super Mario Kart, Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally, and 26-person rooms with spectating.

Where to look in 2026

The usual places are Discord servers, the Mario Kart subreddits and your friends list. They share the same gap: “anyone want to race tonight?” finds you people for one night, not a team that’s still there for the next event.

That’s the gap PaxJax fills. Instead of starting over every session, you can:

  • Filter racers by game, region and schedule, so the people you find are online when you are.
  • Jump into Mario Kart World game chat to find racers who are looking right now.
  • Send an Invite to Play directly, so filling a room takes one tap.
  • Save a standing team with a Looking-for-Team profile, so the same group is ready for the next event or league night.

Find Your Mario Kart World Team

Turn one good night into a standing team

When a room goes well, because the races were close, nobody rage-quit and everyone came back for one more cup, don’t let those racers drift off. Add them, set a regular night, and keep the room rules the same so practice counts.

The teammates worth keeping are the ones who show up when they said they would, race clean in team modes, and stay calm after a Blue Shell on the last lap. Find a few of those and you’ve got a team.
